Bobby – Puerto Rican Amazon Since 1989, I have worked in the Southern Ontario region with birds and others who deal with birds. Before domestically bred, hand-raised youngsters became widely available and well-liked, I first started out with wild-caught parrots. For many years, I focus on instructing people and “taming” (I detest that word!) parrots, both those that had previously been own and those that had recently emerge from quarantine.

I’m happy that I was able to accomplish my objectives, which included bringing a higher quality of life to many of these fearful, misunderstood animals and inspiring countless people to value and respect these special, compassionate beings.

I began breeding well-socialized parrots and assisting people in overcoming behavior issues or adjustment difficulties with their birds as soon as captive infants were made readily available. Despite the exorbitant costs and the low cost of wild parrots, I made it my mission to spread awareness of responsible parrot ownership and the need to support captive breeding programs by only buying birds produced in Canada to keep as pets to anybody who would listen (and some who didn’t).

I have spent all these years working in the pet market because of this. It appears to me that this setting is the best place to introduce and educate individuals.

I’ve had many wonderful opportunities to learn from vets, breeders, nutritionists, behaviorists, and owners of companion parrots over the years. Like you, I frequently required assistance in figuring out what my flock’s requirements were.

After all, folks who believe they are experts generally know very little—certainly, less than our parrots do!

Available: Mitred Conure (Psittacara nitrates) These brightly colored South American birds are locals. Mitered Conures may be highly affectionate and make fantastic family pets if given adequate care and attention. They are fascinating to watch and interact with because of their curious and silly nature, and they adore being the focus of attention!

They can be phenomenal talkers and can sometimes be a bit on the noisier side, though this has helped them gain a reputation as fantastic “watch birds!” Ideally, the minimum cage size for this bird would be 30″ long, 22″ wide, and 63″ high with 3/4″ wire spacing. At Parrot Stars, we focus on education, nutrition, and conservation. We work very hard to help educate our customers on parrot companionship. Prior to taking a bird home, we will provide information on proper housing, creating a safe environment, diet, behavior, hormones, and much more.
